Jiu Qu Hong Mei literally means Nine-Bend Red Plum, where Nine-Bend refers to the area near the Nine-Bend river in Wuyishan. Close to 200 years ago, some farmers migrated from there to the Dawu Mountain in Hangzhou to grow grain and tea plants. They used the Gongfu black tea processing technique to produce a new tea — Jiu Qu Hong Mei. It won the Panama World Expo Gold Medal in 1886, but nowadays it’s not very well-known, especially comparing with West Lake Long Jing from the same area.
This tea’s base uses leaves picked between April 3rd and 6th (around the time of Qingming). In 2021 autumn, it was scented with osmanthus flowers for 7 times. Its origin Longwu tea village owns more than 10,000 mu (~1647 acres) of tea plantations and produces around 70% of all West Lake Long Jing teas every year. Our founder Vincent visited there in early August and picked this tea.
Took advantage of the fact that I had leftover Osmanthus cake from yesterday to finish up this Osmanthus Jiu Qu Hong Mei. A wonderful tea. Strong Osmanthus notes at the beginning leading to honey in later infusions.

Delightful Osmanthus tea. Stronger floral notes in earlier steeps give way to honey notes from the tea.

There's a pressure front, and everyone in my family has painful sinuses today. The tea helped! As before, it's very good, it just gets weak quickly.

Spending today’s session drinking a lovely osmanthus black. Flowery, sweet and nutty. A very interesting session because my mother was buying a door in the other room.

It's a very pretty tea, with the visible osmanthus petals. That said, I'm glad I got a new strainer yesterday to help filter the petals out from the cups! The taste was mild but pl… more

Brewed a 2022 version of this tea for two guests. It was scented in late October, and it’s pretty good. Fewer osmanthus flowers in the dry leaves, yet still fragrant. The aroma is infused with the tea leaves.

An exceptional showing of a tea from our own Vincent, with the base tea being very reminiscent of some of my favorite ZSXZs.

A pretty pleasant tea. Very punchy flavor but more on the tea side than from the flowers. Perhaps doesn’t need a rinse. Will try that next time.
