Liu Bao Dark Tea
We close the year with a dedicated exploration of Liu Bao, a mellow, warming dark tea from Guangxi with deep historical roots and a strong tradition among overseas Chinese communities in Southeast Asia. After sharing a 2010 Betel Nut Aroma Liu Bao in 2023, many club members requested a fuller sampler to understand Liu Bao’s distinct styles, aging pathways, and regional character. All four teas were sourced from a Liu Bao expert and Tsinghua alum from Guangxi whom I’ve known for years and recently reconnected with in Beijing. The 2013 Betel Nut Aroma Liu Bao showcases the woody, nutty profile that defines traditional Liu Bao. The 2015 Ginseng Aroma Golden Flower Liu Bao features naturally developed Eurotium cristatum from long-term basket storage, offering depth and aged complexity. The 2020/2025 Jasmine-Scented Liu Bao pairs Liu Bao’s earthiness with floral notes from Heng County jasmine, creating a soothing balance. Lastly, in a rare and intriguing combination, the 2020/2025 Sun-dried Tangerine Liu Bao fills Qinzhou green tangerines with Liu Bao—a technique common in shou pu’er but still uncommon for Liu Bao. Together, these selections form a structured introduction to Liu Bao’s diversity, from classic aged profiles to regionally innovative expressions.
