Description
This is a wild-grown version of Xin Yang Mao Jian, one of China’s classic green teas from southern Henan. Traditional Xin Yang Mao Jian is known for fine, round, tight, straight leaves with visible white down, producing a fresh, fragrant liquor with a lively green character and lingering sweetness. This Spring 2026 harvest comes from wild tea trees in Xin County, Xinyang, in the Dabie Mountains near Liankangshan National Nature Reserve. The mountain area is currently closed to regular tourism, so the fresh leaves were gathered through local villagers living in the natural villages inside the mountain. Compared with more standard cultivated Xin Yang Mao Jian, this tea feels especially clean and mountain-grown. The dry leaves are slender and downy, with a fresh green fragrance. The cup brings soft chestnut, bean, and wild herb notes, followed by a brisk sweetness and a quiet forest-like aftertaste. It also comes from a historically important tea region. In The Classic of Tea, Lu Yu wrote that among teas from the Huainan tea region, tea from ancient Guangzhou ranked highest. That ancient Guangzhou roughly corresponds to parts of today’s southeastern Henan, including the broader Xinyang tea area.
